The judges have eaten and the results are in for the 2009 Harpoon Championships of New England Barbecue.

Day 1: Saturday July 25, 2009 Four categories (Chicken, Ribs, Pork, and Brisket) are competed on the first day of the championships, with the overall score combined to determine the Grand Champion. The Grand Champion is the state champion of Vermont and will represent the state in the National Championships. For complete rules and scoring, visit the New England Barbecue Society. Grand Champion for 2009: I Smell Smoke I Smell Smoke received 1st place in Pork and Brisket to lead the scoring and become the 2009 Grand Champion. I Smell Smoke was also the 2006 and the 2008 Grand Champion.

Day 2: Sunday, July 26, 2009 ![]() The second day of the championships is the Harpoon Summer Sizzler. Four more categories (Chef's Choice, Chicken Wings, Pork Chops, and Sausage) are judged. Grand Champion for 2009: I Smell Smoke I Smell Smoke received 1st place in the Beer category, placed 2nd in Fish, and 3rd in Lamb, to pull of the unprecedented sweep of the weekend's championships.
